BARRY VAN ZYL (Drums)

Barry started playing drums as a 10 year old, as accompanyist to his piano playing dad! Since then, he graduated from the musicians institute of technology, Hollywood, California with an honours in performance.

He has lectured in the music departments of Cape Town University, Wits University JHB, and Pretoria Technikon. Barry joined the Johnny Clegg band in 1999 when musical director Andy Innes booked him for a tour to Germany. At the time he was touring in Europe with Oliver Mtikudzi's band "Mahube". He's been a member of Johnny 's band ever since, touring extensively in Europe, North America, Asia and the UK. The 1995 world tour ‐ May thru Dec ‐ started in France and ends in Australia/New Zealand and JHB.

Highlights included: guest performances with Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant and Brian May. Headlining the 46664 05 concerts in George, SA and Tromso, Norway. Opening the Montreal jazz fest to an audience of 125 000 people. Summerfest in Florida with Jimmy Buffet guesting. Double bill shows with Lenny Kravitz, the Neville Brothers and Taj Mahal. He also records and tours with Theuns Jordaan. Theuns is presently South Africa's biggest selling artist. With 2 triple platinum albums and the latest release selling 70 000 in the first month. (all on emi sa) recent recording successes were : playing and co ordinating the drums and percussion on Ladysmith Black Mambazo's 2005 triple grammy nominated album, and playing all the percussion on the 2006 Oscar winning feature film "tsotsi".

Barry's current projects are : ‐ working with London based singer/songwriter Robin Auld. After years of talking, Robin and Barry kickstarted the project during Jan 2006 with duo shows around SA, to fantastic audience response. The plan is to add a permanent bass player, record new Robin Auld songs and hopefully tour/market the album in parts of the USA, Europe and Australia. ‐Completing an album titled "baboti" which is being produced by JB Arthur for the label "Instinct Africaine" . "baboti" is a composing/recording collaboration between Barry, Concord Nkabinde and Eftrain Toro ‐ A collaboration project entitled "Tribal Beatz" with UK composer Robin Hogarth for UK label Arc Records

Recording and/or performance credits include : Shawn Phillips, Ernest Ranglin, the Hothouse Flowers, Robin Auld, the Soweto String Quartet, "black", Mick Hucknall, Brian Eno, Oliver Mtukudzi, Efrain Toro, Arno Carstens, Anton Goosen, Valiant Swart, Watershed, Wambali, Peter Gabriel, Tony Cox, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Jimmy Buffet, the London Chamber Orchestra under Raplh Gotoni. He is a busy clinician and in 2006 will do presentations at Berklee Music College in Boston,Musicians Institute in LA and drumtech in London and in France. Barry stays (part of the year anyway!) in Hout Bay, Cape Town. He is an avid runner and spends his downtime doing training runs, practicing drums and sampling the Cape's great red wines.
